KROGER PROMOTES STEWART TO PRESIDENT OF QUIK STOP MARKETS

CINCINNATI, OH – June 29, 2006 – The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) announced today Ron Stewart has been promoted to President of Quik Stop Markets, Inc. effective immediately. In his new role, Mr. Stewart will oversee more than 100 Quik Stop convenience stores in California and Nevada.

Mr. Stewart joined Kroger in 2003 as Senior Vice President of Kwik Shop, Inc.

He has more than 25 years of experience in convenience store management.

“I look forward to working with a great group of associates and franchisees as we continue to grow our business by building on the convenience we offer our customers,” Mr. Stewart said.

Mr. Stewart replaces Van Tarver, who was named Vice President of Convenience Stores, Turkey Hill Dairy and Supermarket Petroleum earlier this month.
